prior to we kick things off I just wish to state that the material that will be gone over on this space is planned for information on academic functions only and should not be considered Monetary recommendations okay so due to international ladies’s day I’m joined by an extremely special visitor Julie Lee and for those that you don’t understand who Julia is Julia is an ETF equities financial investment strategist at stage 3 Global consultants and she has more than twenty years experience in the financial markets and has worked in numerous functions consisting of CIO for Australia equities fund and Equity strategist at Bell direct for 11 years and Julia is also on the board of directors for the Australian stock Brokers foundation and has our masters of company in finance and Julia thanks so much for joining me today we are delighted to have you here such an enjoyment looking forward to it I am what incredible profession that you have actually had more than the last twenty years um it’s quite remarkable however maybe it’s best that you introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about who you are and what you do and I think you can do a better task than I can sure so um I have actually been in financing now for over 20 years
I am a little bit of a geek um I believe in my earlier years I was certainly an introvert but I would have to say of him quite an extrovert now however I’m also quite independent as well um I am quite strong-willed that makes it a little bit tough for hubby often but I I do like the markets and I do love learning too so I’m a little a reader I like numbers and I guess I’m a bit of a late bloomer too I think yeah yeah and to the point that you have actually discussed that you’re an introvert and how I believe I was a shy introverted yeah obviously you’re you’re now an extrovert however how did you how did you transition between that and you’re rather you’re put continuously out there putting yourself out there how did you shift in between that
sure I believe among the things that individuals ask me or or get discussed quite a bit is that I appear to be a natural speaker that I’m rather proficient at public speaking but that absolutely was not always the case and it was a discovered skill for me so whether it was the um getting over the nerves part or the part around body language or perhaps called The Positive walk I believe all of those were um sort of taught skills so it definitely wasn’t something that came naturally to me and I worked really difficult I guess to obtain that ability of being able to speak um and I think one thing that made a huge impression on me for somebody who was late Blue Moon introvert and relative really shy in my younger years was that everyone has the right to speak so to be able to reveal yourself in a manner that individuals understand I think was rather important to me and um I think that’s why I worked at the school and ideally I am far better at it now than I was when I started off I would definitely say so um and how did you can you tell us a bit about how you began in um Financing like why did you select a profession in financing and what was the the first point of contact in the monetary world was there an adult impact or was this something that you were just constantly thinking about I would love to say that you understand I constantly understood what I was going to do which was Finance but that was not the case at all I can come back when I began working it wasn’t.
unusual just to fall under your type of work for me I really wished to be an attorney from the time I had to do with seven years of ages but at the time that I went to UNI there were numerous legal representatives that the unemployment rate with law was so high that you had to do a double degree um so that was sort of five years of a double degree plus an extra year of law school and then 3 years practicing as a solicitor and I believed oh that sort of seem like an extra ten years so I really went and ended up studying business at UTS so um similar to a Commerce degree um but throughout uni I um I operated at an Italian dining establishment and then I tried to open an Italian dining establishment and to do that um I had to take out a loan with a NAB and really I required to pay back that loan when it didn’t work out so um I I saw an advertisement in the paper and it stated do you wish to be a stock broker and I believed oh yeah that sounds respectable yeah we’ll give it a go we’re here we go and um you understand I was fortunate in that sense because I I do enjoy the work I love being able to comprehend companies and to operate in a market where you’re continuously being able to keep up to date with what’s taking place on the planet what’s taking place in terms of improvements in technology or biotechnology and science I believe is an amazing thing so I love to read it and I never ever have a scarcity of stories to read when it comes to the marketplaces yeah excellent and in between shift from oh I may wish to be a stock broker how did you end up being say inequities financial investment strategist how did that take place um existed.
did you work your method up to a certain position or did you simply apply and then begin with there like how did that take place sure so um I think when it concerns the financing world you sort of start everyone begins at a base level and after that you move into the area that you’re interested in my area of interest is constantly markets and I took the view that um you know when I began I didn’t want to just um simply sort of I guess offer something that I was initially involved in so I made a big effort to stroll the walk and speak with talk and that means anything that I was discussing I I made the effort to really trade myself or buy myself too and I began in financing with the view that you understand in any profession or in any occupation it generally takes you about 2 or three years of discovering to understand the lessons involved and what was occurring in that type of world so I I began a financial investment diary with the view that um you know I wanted to learn as much about investing as possible in a sort of 2 to 3 amount of time so because amount of time I sort of offered myself or I enabled myself the opportunity to lose money as I thought to myself for the two to 3 years um that the the goal wasn’t to make as much cash as possible but the goal was to discover the ability of being able to generate income so that I can apply it for the rest of my life so that was an excellent duration for me and I I learned a lot of lessons I delved into fundamental analysis technical analysis understanding organizations looking at market analysis I likewise took a look at things like choices trading which is a lot more dangerous but that was a terrific duration where I I sort of laid the foundation of entering into Equity technique which I truly do take pleasure in and the reason I delight in being an equity strategist is I love understanding cycles and how that impacts on various organizations and the different.
organization environments too so um yeah it’s been a a long journey however one I I’ve definitely um taken pleasure in so I have actually gone from providing um things like essential analysis technical analysis tax reliable investing choices to heading up a fundamental analysis unit where I got to travel a lot to the US and then I transferred to Bell direct where I was Equity strategist there for 11 years and then relocated to do my own funds management company birming invests which I sold in June and now here I am at State Street Global equities and advisors strategists for the ETF location well remarkable um throughout that period when you pointed out um the two to 3 years of discovering how did you discover that your confidence was initially versus after the 3 years and how did you find um the resources to uh educate yourself like nowadays we have podcasts um I make sure like before then we didn’t have too many resources offered as we do now and was it through books or uni.
